April 2020 Meeting

Education Topic: Inclusion and Unconscious Bias

The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities proposes a customized program to assist Society of Government Meeting Professionals in its efforts to support and educate its members around issues of diversity and inclusion. The session will help participants to foster relationships characterized by respect and appreciation for difference.  More specifically, the workshop will help participants better understand their own identities and values as well as well as those of their colleagues and of the communities they serve.  Participants will leave the program with enhanced knowledge in diversity awareness and bias reduction with the motivation and skills necessary to continue working on these issues.

Core Competency – Education and Programing

Speaker:  Jonathan Zur, President and CEO of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Committees

Under Jonathan’s leadership, VCIC increased the number of programs delivered annually by 1,500%, and the organization has been recognized locally and nationally for its effectiveness.  An experienced facilitator and consultant on issues of diversity and inclusion, Jonathan was appointed by the Governor of Virginia to the Commonwealth Commission on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, formed in the aftermath of the tragedy in Charlottesville in August 2017.  In 2016, he was a speaker at the inaugural White House Summit on Diversity and Inclusion in Government.  Jonathan is a graduate of the University of Richmond, and he received a Certificate in Nonprofit Executive Leadership from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.

After the session, attendees will:

  • Express an increased awareness of how attitudes, beliefs, behavior and language can impact the relationships between diverse groups
  • Have increased understanding of the communications skills needed when working within a diverse community
  • Have examined the role of prejudice and advantage, and how these dynamics impact community.
